South Florida High School Outfit Team in Caps

South Florida HS Stepping Up in Player Safety

High school football programs in South Florida are stepping up their commitment to player safety. At John A. Ferguson Senior High School, athletes are outfitted in Guardian Caps to add an extra layer of protection against head impacts. Head coach Gene Chew has been using Guardian Caps with his players for the last five years. He credits them not only with reducing head-to-head contact but also with improving tackling technique.

“It actually makes them more aware that we’re trying to keep the head out of the contact. We actually go step-by-step, putting your knee in between the legs, crouching down as if you were a wrestler, and putting your head to the side of the hip, and then wrapping up rather than running through helmet to helmet.”

Doctors across South Florida agree that preventing concussions requires a multi-layered approach, including proper tackling form, neck strengthening exercises, and strict return-to-play protocols. With nearly 3.6 million concussions reported annually in the U.S. (most among those ages 15 – 24), awareness and proactive steps are crucial.  Quarterback Ryan Ramirez says the additional padding gives him peace of mind.

“Our helmets are protective, they’re good, but this extra layer makes you feel comfortable.”

While experts emphasize that no single solution can eliminate concussion risks, the adoption of Guardian Caps reflects a growing movement in youth football: taking every measure possible to protect developing athletes.
