Guardian Caps Debut in Gwinnett County Scrimmages

August is here, and with it, the hum of whistles and sounds of Friday night lights – football is officially back in Gwinnett County, Georgia. But this season, fans are seeing something new on the field: players are suiting up with Guardian Caps.

Last fall, Gwinnett County Public Schools made a game-changing investment, purchased over 3,500 Guardian Caps – enough to outfit every football player in the district with an extra layer of impact protection against repeated hits.

Now, Guardian Caps aren’t just implemented as a practice standard; they’re popping up in big-time summer scrimmages, signaling the district’s ongoing commitment to player safety. Gwinnett football players are permitted to wear the soft-shell helmet covers in-game during the regular season, if they choose.

“The well-being of our students is our top priority, and by investing in these Guardian Caps, we are taking an important step in protecting them and ensuring they can continue participating in the sport they love safely.”

Jason Holcombe, Gwinnett County Public Schools Athletic Director
