Why Does UGA Have Blue Guardian Caps?

Fall camp is in full swing at the University of Georgia, and if you’ve been keeping an eye on the photos and videos, you may have noticed something new: a few blue Guardian Caps standing out in a sea of red.

At the end of spring practice, Georgia’s head coach Kirby Smart implemented a new tactic, offering a blue Guardian Cap to the three players who embodied his latest mantra: fire, passion and energy.

So, why blue? Well, fire tells the story true. The hottest flames are those that burn blue – a fitting symbol for the intensity he expects.

Georgia’s equipment staff recently ordered 50 more blue Guardian Caps, now allowing players to keep their earned blue Cap for the entirety of the season.

We typically wear red Guardian Caps. We decided that we were going to have coaches pick three players that would have blue Guardian Caps because they had the most fire, passion and energy. I must have had 60 players come up to me and say, ‘Coach, how do I get one of those? How do I get those?’

The Guardian Cap is the leading impact-reducing soft-shell helmet cover, trusted and mandated by all 32 NFL teams for every contact practice to help better protect players at the highest level of the game.

Georgia adopted the usage of Guardian Caps in 2021 and hasn’t looked back since, recently upgrading from the Guardian Cap XT to the Guardian Cap XT 2.0, which features a sleeker look.

As one of hundreds of elite college programs using Guardian Caps, Georgia continues to lead in athlete safety and innovation – reducing impact, one step at a time.
