Guardian Caps Worn in NFL Preseason Games

Guardian Caps Worn in NFL Games

In April, the NFL once again announced an expansion of its Guardian Caps mandate to include defensive backs and receivers for the 2024 season. Additionally, all NFL players are permitted to wear Guardian Caps during games for the 2024 season. We were excited to see this come to life last weekend as there were several players who wore Caps in their preseason games.

James Daniels, Steelers offensive guard, was the first player to wear a Guardian Cap during the Steeler-Texans game on Friday night.  This Sunday, there were 5 Colts players wearing Guardian Caps in their game, including running backs Jonathan Taylor and Zavier Scott, tight end Kylen Granson, safety Rodney Thomas II and linebacker Grant Stuard. Player safety is our priority at Guardian Sports and it is encouraging to see NFL players recognizing the mission of our products.

“This offseason, the NFL announced that players now had the option to wear guardian caps in games. Guardian caps are the interesting-looking head padding worn over helmets that are mandatory for players in practice who are not quarterbacks or kickers/punters. There weren’t many people who believed an NFL player would take the league up on their offer, but Friday night, one did.”

“Our [medical and equipment] guys here do a great job of keeping us informed,” Scott said. “They’ve done the testing, and I don’t know the numbers, but they say it [offers] a significant reduction in concussions.”

“Guardian Caps have become a key part of NFL training camps and practices in recent seasons. They were first implemented by the league as an experiment to see whether they would cut down head injuries amid the league’s concussion crisis. They have worked brilliantly in practice, so players who wish to protect themselves are now allowed to wear the helmet covers in games.”

My head doesn’t hurt, so that’s good,” Daniels said after the game, via Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “Hopefully more and more people start wearing them.”

“Helmet technology has come so far in the last however many years. But as great as modern day helmets are, if there’s something additional you can wear over your state-of-the-art, anti-concussion helmet that gives you even a 5% less chance of getting a concussion, then why wouldn’t you do it?”

Caps in the media have been prevalent from training camps to practice photos. The Guardian Cap is the leading soft shell helmet cover engineered for impact reduction. It brings a padded, soft-shell layer to the outside of the decades old hard-shell football helmet and reduces impact up to 33%. Physics say that an outer “soft” material of the proper density, stiffness and energy absorbing properties reduces the initial severity of the impact. The hard shell then has lower forces transmitted to it, and in turn conveys lower forces to the interior soft helmet padding and then lower forces to the head.
