Rhode Island Shriners Make History: Every Public High School Football Team in the State Will Now Have Guardian Caps

When it comes to better protecting young athletes, Rhode Island just set the bar for the rest of the country.

On Sunday, September 6, the Shriners of Rhode Island Charities Trust partnered to help advance athlete safety by donating 1,100 Guardian Caps to 36 schools throughout the state. The donation provides student-athletes with additional protective equipment as they participate in football this fall and marks Rhode Island as the first state where every school has Guardian Caps.

A Landmark Donation for Student Athlete Safety 

The Shriners outfitted each of the 36 schools with 30 Guardian Caps apiece, ensuring that safety equipment is available to student athletes regardless of a school district’s budget. The presentation took place at 1 p.m. at The Shriners headquarters, One Rhodes Place in Cranston, where Rhode Island State Representative Joseph M. McNamara awarded the organization a House citation recognizing its commitment to student safety.

Rep. McNamara has been a longtime advocate for football helmet safety. Last session, he introduced legislation that would have mandated soft-shell helmet covers for high school football players statewide. While that bill didn’t pass, the Rhode Island Shriners have accomplished through generosity what legislation couldn’t do alone.
