The Virginia Tech Standard

A 5-STAR rating is the highest score awarded by Virginia Tech’s Helmet Lab. Their STAR rating system is widely regarded as the most credible independent safety benchmark in head protection.

“Our impact tests evaluate a headgear’s ability to reduce linear and rotational acceleration of the head resulting from a range of head impacts a soccer player might see on the field,” VT explains regarding their testing, “Headgear with more stars provide a reduction in concussion risk for these impacts compared to helmets with less stars.”

In this testing, each type of headgear undergoes 36 impact tests measuring different linear and rotational forces to the front, side, and back of the head. STAR (Summation of Tests for the Analysis of Risk) scores reflect how much the headgear reduces concussion risk compared to no headgear at all. Unlike pass/fail certifications, Virginia Tech’s ratings rank products against one another, allowing direct comparison of protection levels.
