GHSA Mandates Headgear For 2026 Flag Football Season

GHSA Mandates Headgear For 2026 Flag Football Season:
What Coaches Need to Know & Why You Should Get Your Team In the LOOP
Flag football has always had that reputation… fast, fun, and safer than tackle. But if you’ve coached long enough, you already know the truth: contact still happens. Players collide going for flags, dive for catches, and sometimes take an elbow or knee they didn’t see coming.
That’s exactly why the Georgia High School Association is stepping in.
Starting Fall 2026, GHSA will require protective headgear that is Virginia Tech Helmet 5 star certified for all flag football players.
And let’s be real, this isn’t just a minor rule tweak. This is a shift that’s going to impact how you coach, how your players prepare, and how your program operates.
The good news? The solution is already on the market. The LOOP is a 5-Star rated by Virginia Tech and the most affordable soft-shell headband, built exactly for this mandate.
Here’s everything you need to know:
What the New GHSA Mandate Means:
GHSA’s new mandate is straightforward: every player is required to wear protective headegar that is Virginia Tech Helmet 5-Star certfied beginning with the Fall 2026 season. Officials will enforce it on game day. Programs that show up without compliant gear risk having players ruled ineligible or forfeiting games altogether.
Your AD needs to know about this. Your budget needs to reflect it. And your athletes need to be in gear before the season opener.

What does Virginia Tech 5-Star Helmet Rated mean?
The Virginia Tech 5-Star Helmet Rating for flag football is a safety system created by the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab to measure how well padded headgear reduces concussion risk. Because flag football uses soft-shell headgear instead of helmets, the lab tests them in sport-specific impact scenarios, including player collisions and hits to the ground. Sensors measure how much force is transferred to the head, including both linear and rotational acceleration, which are linked to brain injury.
Helmets are then scored using the STAR system and rated from 1 to 5 stars. A 5-star rating means the helmet offers the best reduction in head impact forces compared to other options, though it does not make the helmet completely concussion-proof.
A total of 45 flag football headgear have been rated using the STAR evaluation system.
